Treatment methods have been around for hundreds of years, and people have always been trying to find a cure for acne. Some treatments have been more effective than others, and now with the advent of technology and medicine, more possibilities in treating acne have arisen.

A common question that an acne sufferer must answer, is whether or not they want to try and cure their acne by natural remedies, creams, or through laser therapy. Indeed, laser therapy is advisable for those who have acne that is unmanageable, but just how effective are natural remedies and those creams that we see on TV that supposedly do wonderful and miraculous things?

The answer is, most so called 'acne cure creams', do little to actually get rid of acne. Whilst cleaning ones face and applying moisturizer is important for getting rid of excess dirt and filth that can lead to further acne, cleaning oneself too much or applying too many skin-care cream can actually create a reverse effect by over irritating the skin. It's important to do everything in moderation. Whilst creams and the like do offer some minimal relief of acne, don't rely on them too much.

A common thing that people overlook are some of the natural remedies that are available for treating acne. A number of naturally growing plants and herbs can offer great relief for acne, and have been used by acne sufferers for hundreds of years.

Newer isn't necessarily better, and with acne treatment companies trying to make as much money as possible by advertising products that are a 'cure for acne', a lot of natural remedies are being overshadowed. Just because an acne product is advertised every day on TV, doesn't necessarily mean it works. Look into some of the natural remedies that nature has to offer you, you may be quite surprised how effective some of them are.

If your acne is so severe that your entire face is clothed in pimples, then you may consider booking an appointment with a dermatologist and looking at some more advanced treatment methods. Laser light therapy is an excellent treatment option for those who are serious about getting rid of their acne once and for all.

There are many other treatment options out there, much too many to list here. Face peeling masks, medication, special moisturizers, the list is endless. Finding a treatment method that suits you may be difficult, but the most important thing to remember is not to over treat yourself. Whatever treatment method you decide to use, make sure to use it in moderation, and clean your face regularly, but not excessively. Twice a day is normally enough.

There is no single cure for acne, but there are a lot of treatments out there that will help you alleviate the annoying outbreaks. Find which treatment work best for you, and use it appropriately.

The Best Cure For Acne

The best cure for acne that really work are those that are integrated in a more complex skincare plan, often put together with the dermatologist. The development of cosmetic dermatology presently allows for the choice of various treatments either from topical cures or prescription medication. Laser surgery, dermabrasion, light therapy, herbal formulas and pharmaceutical products all can be discussed in terms of acne remedies and tissue recovery.

Although it may sound incredibly simple, water makes the best of natural remedies because of its capacity of flushing the toxins out of the system. If not eliminated the toxins get clogged in the skin, accumulate and create the right environment for the development of bacterial infections. You can also fight against acne by a diet rich in vegetables and fruit, as green food enhances the immune function by the quality nutrients it brings.

When it comes to natural best cure for acne with an anti-bacterial impact, a very powerful cure is tea tree oil. Apply this oil on the acne affected skin portions on a daily basis after having cleaned the skin. Other alternatives include honey, almond oil, peppermint oil and citric juices. Such variants can be combined with other remedies on the one condition to stick to the treatment if once you take it up.

If natural acne remedies do not make a viable solution, and you expect a treatment to work overnight, then, then go for oral and topical medication. Items that contain salicylic acid, benzyl peroxide and zinc make the most frequent product ingredients when it comes to dealing with blackheads, whiteheads, pimples or sun-damaged wrinkled skin. Do not administrate oral pills by word of mouth and without consulting a doctor first; antibiotics such as erythromycin and tetracycline are the most often prescribed drugs.

Last but not least, cosmetic acne remedies remain the traditional form of treatment that so many people choose. Although we now have laser removal therapy available, facials and chemical peels are still very much in use in most beauty centers. Blue light is another cosmetic approach to acne, a method that destroys the acne-causing bacteria through a special light wavelength. This kind of acne remedies prove valid but costly solutions for both active acne and acne scars.

One thing is clear, people use a huge number of acne remedies both varied and complex. Some manage to solve their skin problem quickly, while others get a hard time trying to beat up the acne outbreak.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ - Extreme Methods To Cure Bad Acne

The most common methods to get rid of acne are to use lotions and astringents, to wash correctly and lastly to eat properly.. Well for those (like I was) these simple methods may not be at all good enough to treat your acne problems. If your acne problems are very severe then you may need to consult with a dermatologist to try these for more invasive and advanced acne treatments. The most popular and effective treatments for this severe acne are chemical peels, drainage, and light therapy

A Dermatologist can analyze your skin, your prior acne treatment methods and can try other methods to help clear acne. These treatments can not be done at home and need to be performed by a dermatologist. Trying these at home can lead to infection, worsening of the acne and scarring.

Chemical Peels - This is the only treatment that you can do without the help of a dermatologist but instead can go to a spa or other beauty type place. Light chemical peels of glycolic acid and other chemical agents are used to loosen blackheads and decrease acne papules. The great side effect of a chemical peel is that it will give your face a nice clean and fresh look. Never do chemical peels at home as it can burn your skin veery badly if done incorrectly.

Drainage and Surgical Extraction - Do not get turned off by the terminology, this type of "surgery" is simple, effective and done in a dentists office. When large cysts do not respond to medication they may require drainage. Drainage and extraction, which is also called "acne surgery" is simply a method to get the pus and infection out by injecting and then allowing the acne to drain itself. This will reduce the pain associated with your cysts and it will stop the possibility of scarring.

Phototherapy - I am not sure how well this worked for me but I used a suntan type booth years back that was supposed to help my skin. This is like using a suntan bed and many people like using this as it gives you a chance to get some color. Several laser and light treatments are available to treat acne. Some of these laser and light treatments target only one factor that causes acne, that is the acne bacteria itself..

Advantages to laser and light treatments include not having to remember to apply or take any medication and the ability to treat hard-to-reach areas, such as the back. However, laser and light treatments can be quite expensive, and I am not sure how I feel about the effectiveness when I used it.

Scarring is another reason to use light therapy. Over the last several years lasers have become a great way to treat acne scars.

These methods are vert invasive and sometimes are a little more than you may need. Some people can easily get away with some advanced methods for example orally taking antibiotics like tetracycline and even Accutane.

Light Treatment For Acne – Is This The Real Cure?

Light Treatment For Acne - Is This The Real Cure?

Acne light treatment, also known as Clearlight or Blue light therapy is the newest addition to the long-line of acne treatments in the market. This therapy is believed to be the hope for acne patients who have little or not success with all the other available forms of treatments. Blue light therapy works by killing the bacteria which cause most cases of acne. P. Acnes generates small molecules called porphyrins which help in producing the bacteria which, in turn, cause acne inflammation. These porphyrins are the main target of Blue light therapy. It has been observed that porphyrins that have been exposed to Clearlight eventually produce free radicals that wipe out the P. acnes bacteria.

The popularity of acne light treatment is growing each day as more and more people are being treated of their blemishes in a drug-free manner. This light treatment, as compared to the topical medications that often burn the skin, does not contain strong ingredients which would also cause some damage. Most topical creams or solutions cause redness, peeling, and an increase on sensitivity to light. Blue light therapy is known as a magnificent alternative to most of the stingy acne treatments.

There are some individuals who have voiced out their concern that this treatment might not be that safe as it used to utilize UV or ultraviolet light (which is known to be harmful to the skin). This concern has long been answered as the FDA has cleared acne light treatment and approved it for use since it no longer utilizes UV light. FDA's approval for this therapy was released in August 2002.

There has been an experiment made wherein two 15-minute exposures in a week (for a total of four weeks) reduced acne for about 60% among 80 percent of patients. The remission in acne lasted for as long as three or even up to eight months.

Dermatologists now offer Clearlight and it is administered with the use of a blue or red light which uses Acne PhotoClearingTM-APCTM technology. The red or blue light zeroes in on the acne surface and eventually repairs it. In a single month, an acne patient could already walk out of the clinic, free of inflamed acne.

Patients who undergo Clearlight are, basically, exposed to a source of low intensity blue light (about 405-420 nm) for 15 minutes twice each week. This goes on for four straight weeks and sessions cost about -150. This makes the set of treatment approximately 0, and the sad part is, since it is considered as a cosmetic treatment, it will not be covered by any medical insurance.

A different form of blue light therapy is the LHE therapy or the pulsed light and heat energy therapy. LHE makes use of both heat and light to destroy the underlying cause of acne. It works much like blue light therapy as it uses light to kill the bacteria that cause acne. The addition of heat ascertains a reduction on sebum. This reduction causes sebaceous glands to shrink. LHE promises fast results in as little as 30 days. With sessions done in over ten minutes, more and more patients are opting to go under the light. For any information on acne light treatments, it is best to ask your dermatologist. Remember that only the mild to moderate cases can be treated with LHE. For more severe cases, consult a specialist.

Light Therapy – A Cure For Skin Problems And Other Disorders

Light Therapy - A Cure For Skin Problems And Other Disorders

Light therapy or phototherapy is an alternative treatment based on light exposure for various disorders. This procedure, which is also called light box therapy, involves the use of light brighter than regular indoor lighting, but significantly less bright than sunlight.

1. What Can Light Therapy Cure?

- Psoriasis
- Hyperbilirubinemia
- Atopic dermatitis
- Other skin disorders
- Sleep disturbance
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Mental disorders
- Schizoaffective
- Bipolar disorders

2. Treatment

Under the treatment, patients are exposed directly to full-spectrum bright light. The patient either sits down, if a light box is used as the source, or has some degree of mobility if a light visor is used. The duration of the exposure depends on the seriousness of the condition, reduction or elimination of the symptoms and light strength. Depression is one condition that is eliminated through the therapy. The affected individual's biological clock, or the natural course of one's waking and sleeping hours, is gradually normalized following light therapy. The process involves gradually increasing the time exposed to a high-intensity fluorescent lamp from about 30 minutes up to about 2 hours every morning - the time when the therapy is said to be most effective. Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression caused by the absence of or limited exposure to sunlight during fall and winter. The use of light therapy has been cited by up to 90% of individuals with SAD as helpful in making them feel better, possibly because the treatment takes the place of sunlight exposure. SAD symptoms could take as long as three weeks before they are relieved through the therapy.

3. Not A Replacement For Traditional Care

Although the treatment is safe, most experts do not see light therapy as a replacement to traditional medical care. However, the approach is considered a good complement to other therapies. Patients should visit their health practitioner if treatment fails to eliminate symptoms of depression, or specially if they worsen, following an extended period of time. As with regular therapy, some side effects have also been observed with light therapy. These include headache, sweating, eyestrain, nausea, and agitation. More extreme and adverse effects include skin damage, eye cancer and skin and genital cancer. Some patients have also reported difficulty in falling asleep, although these are mostly individuals having the treatment towards the end of the day. Relief from insomnia is achieved mainly by reducing light exposure time and having the therapy earlier in the day, or by applying dawn simulation. The therapy is not advisable for individuals with sensitive skin and eyes.

4. Light Booth Studies - Does This Actually Work?

Light boxes, ultra violet booths, commercial tanning beds and related equipment also pose the question of cost. If the doctor being consulted has these equipment in the clinic, the problem would be more of a time issue, or ensuring daily or regular visits. Some companies have light therapy equipment for rent, although insurance coverage may not include these as part of the treatment. Psychiatric research from the Chapel Hill School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina has found comparable results between phototherapy, or light therapy, and antidepressant drug therapy in the treatment of SAD and other mood disorders. The 2005 study applied systematic statistical analysis to earlier clinical literature covering 20 randomized studies. These studies focused on 18- to 65-year-old adults who exhibited mood disorder and were grouped into four treatment classes: bright light for non-seasonal depression, bright light for SAD, integrated bright light-regular antidepressant use for non=seasonal sufferers and dawn simulation.

Scientists found that the elimination of methodologically flawed studies from the controlled set and meta-analysis of the remaining organized material established the efficacy of light therapy for SAD and depression. UNC psychiatry chairman Dr. Robert Golden, who is also vice dean of the UNC medical school, noted that light therapy intervention delivered results comparable to traditional depression treatments as detailed in medical literature. Although the scientists concluded that light therapy is an effective treatment for SAD and non-seasonal disorders, they emphasized that the research did not establish the treatment's safety and/or negative side effects because of limited related data. Researchers also did not look at the effects of light therapy on the aged, children and adolescents.

Acne Light Treatment – an Acne Cure

Acne Light Treatment - an Acne Cure

Acne light treatment is rapidly becoming a popular acne remedy because it is a fairly easy and a drug-free way to help heal blemishes. As you know, many topical medications contain strong ingredients that damage sensitive skin, resulting in peeling, redness, and increased sun sensitivity. Ouch ! But, Blue light (not the beer, if you are a Canadian) therapy is widely regarded as an excellent alternative to most acne medications. Some individuals have expressed concern over the safety of this procedure, becuase this procedure used to use ultraviolet (UV) light that was harmful to the skin. Fortunately, modern Clearlight treatments have been FDA approved and free of UV dangers.

The FDA approved blue light therapy for acne in August of 2002. In studies, two 15-minute exposures a week for a period of four weeks produced a 60 percent reduction in acne in 80 percent of patients. Reported remissions from acne lasted as long as three to eight months. The first approved system of treatment, ClearLight, is now available through dermatologists. This method involves a new therapeutic blue or red light that uses what is called Acne PhotoClearingTM - APCTM technology. It targets and destroys the surface of the acne and quickly and easily repairs it. It is also known to be effective in clearing inflamed acne in one month.

So how does blue light therapy work?

Basically, patients are exposed to a low intensity blue light source (405 nm to 420 nm) for 15 minutes twice per week for 4 weeks. Each session costs between and 0, making a full course of treatment an average of 0. But, wouldn't you know it, acne light treatment is considered cosmetic and is therefore not covered by insurance.

Another form of acne light therapy that is used more and more is known as pulsed light and heat energy (LHE) therapy.

LHE therapy uses both light and heat to eradicate the root causes of acne. Very much like blue light therapy, LHE therapy uses light to destroy acne-causing bacteria. It also uses heat to reduce the production of sebum and to help shrink sebaceous glands. It is an attractive option for many acne sufferers because it promises fast results. Usually, improvement in the symptoms of acne can be seen in as little as 30 days. Not surprisingly, this is becoming popular because it is a fast treatment, with most sessions done in just over 10 minutes. The FDA has approved LHE therapy for the treatment of mild to moderate acne.

While different kinds of light therapies may seem attractive, they can also be expensive, and may not be covered by most health insurance plans. If you are looking for an answer that is milder and less expensive, consider the many herbal therapies that are available. Some acne sufferers swear by certain herbal supplements, including black currant seed oil, evening primrose oil and others. Follow the instructions on the bottle or ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice. Also, never take any herbal medication if you are taking prescription drugs as their could be side effects. Consult with your Pharmacist or Doctor first.

Visit a skin specialist or dermatologist for more information on acne light treatments.

Seasonal Affective Disorder: Understand The Cause And Cure The Symptoms Naturally

Seasonal Affective Disorder: Understand The Cause And Cure The Symptoms Naturally

SAD, otherwise known as 'seasonal affective disorder', is systemic in nature, and this condition can affect anywhere from 5 to 25 percent of the American population.

The symptoms can range from a relatively mild subtype form, of which affects a larger number of people and is commonly known as the 'winter blues', to more of a 'I can't get out of bed' type of clinical depression that affects a smaller portion of the population. Both though, disappear just as soon as daylight hours begin to increase in the spring. SAD seems to affect more females, 70 to 80 % of all sufferers, for unknown reasons, than males or children. Symptoms in males, however, can be more severe.

The whole seasonal affective disorder phenomenon has not always been recognized as a medical condition. The term was first acknowledged, and appeared in 1985. The onset of the condition typically can begin as soon as late summer or early fall arrives, and can last until mid to late spring. Roughly 6 to 7 percent of the population, over 10 million, reports experiencing the extreme symptoms of SAD like, clinical depression, cravings for and overeating of refined carbohydrates, sleeping excessively, a heightened sensitivity to pain, social withdrawal, significant weight gain (as much as 40 pounds a season), lack of motivation, loss of interest in things or people normally enjoyed, or a perverse sadness.

Regardless of your gender or age, however, the first step to getting to the root cause of the problem that may be causing your winter woes, is recognizing any variations of symptoms you may be experiencing. Milder symptoms are, largely, scaled down a bit from some of those mentioned above, even possibly a few others that are not mentioned here. The bottom line is, you simply do not have to dread going into the shorter days, and long nights every fall and winter season. You can become pro-active in reversing your symptoms, once you begin to understand how.

The main cause of SAD, of which you may or may not be aware of, has a relatively natural and simple treatment. Direct skin contact and eye exposure to brilliant sunlight is the curative answer. Unfiltered sunlight is the only way to benefit directly, as sunlight filtered through glass will give very little, if any, noticeable benefits.

Symptoms of depression coinciding with shorter daylight hours can definitely be a problem for many people living in the Northern Hemisphere. And, the further away you live from the equator, the less sunlight exposure time is available for your body to produce ample amounts of vitamin D through your skin. In extreme northern areas the amount of sun basking time is cut rather short, to only about 3 to 4 months out of a year.

For those of you who do live further north, and are feeling lethargic, you are most likely experiencing your body's inability to properly regulate the hormone melatonin. The hormone melatonin is produced by the pineal gland. Basically, this hormone is produced during darkness to help induce drowsiness, enabling you to sleep.

On the flip side, exposing yourself to more unfiltered sunlight, during daylight hours, helps with the regulation of an alertness hormone, called serotonin. When there is an adequate amount of this naturally occurring body neurotransmitter chemical being produced, it promotes a sense of alertness and optimal emotional well being.

A useful tip worth mentioning here, this light needs to come in through your eyes as well as your skin. When you are outside on a sunny day, take out the contacts, lay your eyeglasses aside, and for heavens sake, take off those stylish sunglasses for just a little while. Even if you can't see very well without your prescription eye ware, give yourself at least 30 minutes, or longer if you can, to help your body regulate its serotonin production levels.

Vitamin D, which is more accurately described as a hormone, is made through your skin with bare skin contact to ultra violet sun rays. This has also been found to significantly boost serotonin levels in the brain.

So, what if exposing yourself to more sunlight is next to impossible because of where you make your home or what you do to earn a living?

There are several different strategies you can use to get a better grip on the symptoms of this negative, and temporary, seasonal affliction the natural way. These helpful tips can really make antidepressants unnecessary.

By and large, the main technique has already been mentioned. Even on a mild and sunny winter day, shed some clothing when you get a chance, and expose what skin you comfortably can. Tanning beds are another option, however, be careful not to over do this one. Investing in a bright light box, which you can build yourself if you are a good handyman, works for many. Turn one room in your home to a bright light room, by installing the right light fixtures and obtaining the special light bulbs that are required.

In combination with light therapy, you can also use daily dietary nutritional measures, and lifestyle changes, to help insure you are getting enough physical exertion, and maintaining optimal vitamin D levels. Here is a helpful list of dietary and lifestyle tips to try.

1.Avoid consuming to many refined carbohydrates (eating to many can actually make you feel worse).

2.You might try having your vitamin D levels monitored occasionally. Talk to your doctor about this.

3.Take a high quality omega-3 fish oil supplement

4.Try supplementing with a vitamin D-3 (as cholecalciferol) tablet.

5.Get plenty of adequate physical exercise. Walking for 30 minutes a day or longer is very beneficial in fighting depression.

Above all of these measures, please consider the implications of being chronically dehydrated. Are you guilty of not providing your body with enough pure water consumption? Would you rather drink anything else but water? When you are not providing yourself with enough of your body's preferred beverage, it is going to rob you of real energy.

In Dr. Batmanghelidj M.D.'s self-help medical manual titled, "Your Body's Many Cries For Water", page 56, has this to say about stress and depression. "Pathology that is seen to be associated with "stresses"-- fear, anxiety, insecurity, persistent emotional and matrimonial problems-- and the establishment of depression are the results of water deficiency to the point that the water requirement of the brain tissue is affected. The brain uses electrical energy that is generated by the water drive of the energy generating pumps. With dehydration, the level of energy generation in the brain is decreased".

You can look at increasing your water intakes as energizing in itself. Simple water is the perfect fluid solvent to transport all of your nutritional supplements with, in receiving their potential, and maximum, benefits to the fullest. After all, was that not the reason why you invested your time, knowledge, and money to begin with?

May this helpful information support you well until the warmth of spring and summer arrives in your neighborhood. At which time, get out there and expose your skin and eyes to that wonderfully healthy bright, white sunlight for vitality, all season long!

Strangely enough, porphyrins that are exposed to the blue light are able to produce free radicals that destroy the P. acnes bacteria.

This method involves a new therapeutic blue or red light that uses what is called Acne PhotoClearingTM – APCTM technology.
