While there is no exact number available on precisely how many people struggle with acne around the world, you can bet there is thousands, even millions that do. Companies that sell acne-treatment or removal products make millions of dollars annually. It's a very lucrative industry indeed. Although acne has many causes, it is typically caused by a buildup of excess oils in the skin. A certain amount of oils is healthy and even necessary, but when it becomes too much, that's when it becomes unhealthy and you experience breakouts. Today there are many different treatments for acne, no matter how old you are or what type of acne you have. Many who suffer from acne haven't found much comfort in mainstream remedies, so they turn to the alternatives.

 

You may be hesitant at first to try these all-natural, alternatives, but there are many up-sides. One such up-side is the fact that these natural alternatives have virtually no nasty side-effects like the more common methods of treating acne do. An example of these natural remedies is the combination of sandalwood and basil leafs. This method treats acne without delivering inconvenient and sometimes dangerous side-effects like most others do. You can find most of these remedies online, because they are not carried in most stores.

 

In most cases, acne is caused by Vitamins E and A lacking in the skin. One way to cure or at least prevent acne is by making sure you have a healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables, including apples, oranges, celery, etc. Eating these foods can give you the essential vitamins that will prevent acne from appearing. You can also take supplements that give you the vitamins you need to stay acne-free. These methods are typically effective and also cost-effective.

 

Another growing popular way to treat acne is by light therapy. As odd as it may sound, this method which utilizes the use of ultra-violet light rays is used to rid the skin of blemishes. However, before you resort to any sort of surgery, whether or not it is invasive, you should talk to your dermatologist and exhaust all other possibilities beforehand. You want to get rid of your acne with the least amount of risk.

 

Despite the great things people say about some acne products, I have found that most acne treatments simply did not work for me.

A light therapy box is a small, portable device containing fluorescent bulbs or tubes and is used in the treatment of SAD. A variety of light therapy boxes tailored to help treat SAD currently exist. As such, it is essential to know what to look out for when you have made a decision to buy an SAD light box.

Light therapy is most effective when you have the proper combination of intensity, duration and timing.

The intensity of a light box is recorded in lux; this is a measure of the amount of light received at a specific distance from a light source. Light boxes specifically used for light therapy usually produce between 2500 and 10000 lux (10000 lux being typical, this is usually about ten times brighter than exposure to normal room lights but still weaker than light experienced on a sunny beach). The intensity of the light box you use may determine the distance at which you need to be from it and most importantly the length of time you need to use it. 10000 lux light boxes typically require, on average, 30 minutes per session. On the other hand, 2500 lux light boxes may require up to 2 hours per session.

The duration of light treatment works hand in hand with the intensity of your light box, and as such, at lower intensities, longer light therapy sessions will be required daily. Typical daily sessions of light therapy ranges from 20 minutes to 2 hours. As previously mentioned, an intensity of 10000 lux would typically require about 30 minutes per session.

The time of day during which light therapy can be administered can vary. However, light therapy is most effective for most people if used in the morning on waking up. Administering light therapy at night can disrupt your sleep.

When choosing a light box, the following are a few things to consider,
1. Intensity – It is essential to look out for a light box, which allows you the right intensity at a distance comfortable for you. Nowadays most light boxes offer 10000 lux within a few inches from the box.
2. UV exposure – Be on the look out for light boxes, which produce as little UV light as possible at high intensity or which carefully shield UV rays that are produced.
3. Light direction – It is essential that light should come from above your line of sight and not below it. Ensure the light box you want can be positioned appropriately.
4. Style – Light boxes come in various shapes and styles, some look like upright lamps, whilst others are small and rectangular. You can even purchase small, portable “on the go” light boxes if you travel frequently.
5. Convenience – This is something to consider if you are looking for a portable light box that can be moved easily and can fit the desired location in your home or office.

For some, it can just stop there but for others the problem continues when a bacteria known as Propionibacterium, becomes involved. This bacteria is commonly found on the skin, but it uses sebaceous to grow and it known that people with acne have an overabundance of Propionibacterium. Since bacteria is involved, white blood cells are attracted and cause a breakdown on the skin, which results in the red blotchy inflamed skin associated with acne.


How Does light therapy It Work?


Recently light therapy has shown to be a promising break through. It works by utilizing a blue or a red light wave and the FDA has approved this process for mild to moderate acne. Light therapy for acne involves exposing the skin to the light for about 20 to 30 minutes and uses a blue ray to destroy the bacteria Propionibacterium. The red light used i helps to reduce the swelling and inflammation caused by the white blood cells; some patients do have some mild pain after using light therapy.


Light therapy for acne and treatments are often offered through a dermatologist center and usually takes the form of monthly treatments as acne is an ongoing problem for many. There are now hand held devices available that can be purchased for the home, however it is recommended that it is discussed with a doctor to see which would work the best for the type and severity of acne you are suffering from


Although approved by the FDA, there have been no long term studies as to any damage caused by light therapy but for many, the benefits brought about by light therapy for acne are a testament to the success of the process.
