There are 3 stages in acne : mild, moderate and severe. The mild to moderate forms of acne can be treated using facial wash, facial cleansers, astringents and other products containing Benzoyl Peroxide and the likes. No matter the stage of acne, proper care and cleansing is necessary so regular washing, preferably once in the morning and once at night is advised.
Acne is graded by dermatologists to be mild if there are no more than 36 comedones or papules scattered on the patient's face, with no lesions or lesions that are minimal. Even infants can be diagnosed to having mild acne. This is nothing to be worried about, everybody can have this and everyone can experience having mild acne at least once in their life. Mild acne can be found on people ages 0 to 99. Mild acne can be found not just on the face but also on the neck, back, arms, thighs, chest and shoulders.
Acne is graded to be moderate if the patient has red lesions and more than 36 comedones or pustules (not papules). Comedones and pustules can be inflamed and they are visible even at 2.5 meters away. This type of acne can also be found in babies and older people but the chances are small. Moderate acne is usually experienced by teenagers.
Severe acne is classified by having lots of comedones and pustules all over the face and neck. These are large pustules and they can be very painful. If you have severe acne, better ask for a dermatologist's help as usual facial wash may not help. Severe acne is usually treated with oral medications as prescribed by the dermatologists. This is the type of acne that causes severe depression to teenagers and may result to low self-esteem. Their face can be covered with pustules containing pus and this is obvious they feel bad and rejected, knowing others are easily disgusted by this sight.

There are many treatments available for acne and all of them work on the same basic premise. Reducing sebum production (the body’s natural oil), accelerating the growth of new skin cells to replace and remove dead skin cells and combating bacterial infection are all components to the treatment of acne. Your dermatologist or doctor can recommend which treatment program is right for you. It is possible to see results within 4-8 weeks and often the symptoms become worse before they get better.

The body becomes resistant to any antibiotic with too much exposure to the medication. The acne treatment becomes ineffectual, as the antibiotic is not killing off the bacteria.

Isotretinoin- If the acne is severe enough that is doesn’t respond enough to topical treatments or antibiotics; Isotretinoin (Accutane) may be optimal for deep scarring cystic acne or stubborn acne. This is a powerful medication and is to be used in only acute cases. Isotretinoin may cause severe birth defects and cannot be administered to pregnant women or women who become pregnant while undergoing treatment. The FDA has initiated a mandatory monitoring program that all women of reproductive age must participate in, due to the extremely serious nature of the likely side effects of Isotretinoin. During treatment with isotretinoin, liver enzyme levels can increase, levels of triglycerides may heighten and cholesterol in the blood can skyrocket. These levels will most likely return to normal once treatment with this medication has terminated.
Oral contraceptives- Studies have shown that oral contraceptives have improved acne conditions in women. Always discuss with your doctor the potential side effects of oral contraceptives such as norgestimate (Ortho-cyclen) and ethinyl estradiol (Ortho Tri-Cyclen).
Cosmetic surgery- In some cases, when acne was left untreated or in the severest of cases where acne has left deep and unsightly scarring, cosmetic procedures may be desired. Dermabrasion, Chemical Peels, Laser resurfacing and intense light therapy are all viable options. These procedures are not only for acne-scarred sufferers; they may be opted for plainly cosmetic reasons as well. These procedures are to be administered by a doctor as they can cause severe damage to the skin. For patients whose skin has a tendency to form scar tissue, these procedures are not recommended, as they will make the problem worse.

There are many different types of acne treatment products. Some are available by prescription only. Others can be purchased in department stores, grocery stores or drug stores. Before you spend your hard earned money on acne treatment products, it's best to understand the different types of acne.
Generally, acne is placed into one of three categories: mild, moderate or severe. Acne can occur on nearly any part of the body, including the face, neck, back, arms, and legs. The acne treatment for each category varies greatly and may include the use of cleansers, toners, astringents, vitamin therapy, light therapy, prescription medications, or a combination of these.
For reasons no one completely understands, follicles (or pores) sometimes become blocked with sebum (oil). When sebum is trapped beneath the skin's surface, a closed comedone develops. This type is commonly referred to as a "whitehead." When the sebum is exposed to air, it darkens into an open comedone and is referred to as a "blackhead." When comedones become infected with bacteria, swelling, redness and pus develop. This form is commonly referred to as a pimple or "zit." These sac-like lesions contain liquid consisting of dead cells, bacteria and white blood cells. Sometimes these lesions turn into nodules, which extend into the deeper layers of the skin.

Acne severity ranges from comedones to nodules and cysts. Mild acne is when a person occasionally has a few pimples. Acne falls into the moderate category when comedones cover approximately half of the face. Acne is considered severe when comedones become deep, inflamed and cyst-like. This form of acne can be very painful and cause tissue destruction which results in scarring.
Mild acne is generally treated with over-the-counter creams that incorporate benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. People with moderate acne are generally treated by a dermatologist. Therapy may include prescription antimicrobial ointments, retinoid creams or oral medications. If left untreated, moderate acne can quickly turn into severe acne.
Severe acne is the most difficult type to treat. Not only does this type cause damage to the skin, which can result in scarring; severe acne can also lead to psychological and emotional trauma. Many people with severe acne experience feelings of sadness, depression and embarrassment.
In the case of severe acne, dermatologists generally will use very aggressive treatments. Therapy usually involves the use of oral antibiotics and medications such as Accutane; corticosteroid injections; or acne surgery to drain cysts.
