Understanding Body Acne and Treatment Options

Acne is a common skin disease that is characterized by a variety of lesions: comedones (whiteheads and blackheads) papules (raised red areas), and pustules (raised skin eruptions filled with pus). Acne is most often found on the forehead, nose and cheeks, but body acne is also possible, and the legs, back and shoulders can be affected. Acne generally starts during adolescence and fades considerably during the 20s or 30s, but occasionally, someone can pass through adolescence unscathed and develop acne in his or her 30s or 40s.

The exact cause of acne vulgaris (the word acne comes for the Greek word for peak, and vulgaris means common) is not known, but an increase in hormonal activity, e.g., during puberty or menstruation, common skin bacteria, stress, and sebaceous glands (small glands under the skin) that are producing too much sebum (a thick secretion of fat and dead skin) may all contribute. There is likely no single cause for acne, but many factors, and there are many other explanations for why it occurs.

But although the exact cause of acne is not known, the process of the disease has been clearly outlined. The sebaceous glands are attached to hair follicles that start below the surface of the skin, and sebum normally passes to the surface of the skin through the hair follicles. However, in acne, there is an overproduction of sebum, and the skin cells that line the follicle and normally move to the surface with sebum proliferate. The combination of excess sebum and dead skin cells blocks the hair follicle, sebum builds up, and a whitehead or a blackhead is produced (Many people think blackheads are dirt in the pores; that's not true. The black color comes from a chemical change in the sebum/dead skin compound and from the presence of pigment cells). If the process continues, bacteria that are normally present in the skin (Propionibaterium acnes) find this environment very conducive to growth. The result? Infection, inflammation and the pus-filled lesions that most people associate with acne.

Acne can't be cured, but it can be managed, and this can be a challenge, especially if you have body acne with widespread lesions. Traditionally, people have been instructed to avoid certain foods such as french fries, potato chips, chocolate and others, but there is no definite evidence that these foods cause acne or make a pre-existing condition worse. The most basic and the simplest steps in treating acne are to keep the skin clean and oil-free (a real challenge for people with body acne). That sounds simple, but there are literally hundreds of acne products on the market - most of which promise more than they deliver - so it's hard to know which one to choose The quick answer is that there are no 'miracle' treatments and everything you need you can find at the local pharmacy. Use a mild, water-based skin cleanser that will not clog pores and use an exfoliant. Exfoliation removes the surface layer of dead skin cells and helps keep the pores open and draining.

The second step to treating body acne is topical treatments. There are a variety of these and you may have to experiment - at times with help from your doctor - to find one that works. Benzoyl peroxide is an antibacterial that can be purchased over the counter, and topical antibiotics such as erythromycin, clindamycin, and tetracycline can be used. These are especially useful for people with body acne as they can be applied directly to the areas with lesions.

If topical treatments are ineffective, you doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin, tetracycline) or for women, oral contraceptives; oral medications are also especially useful for people with body acne as a) topical treatments can be awkward or inconvenient to apply in hard to reach places, and b) oral medication is delivered directly to the affected areas below the surface of the skin. Oral retinoids such as isotretinoin reduce sebaceous gland secretions and can also be effective and light therapy has been used with some success; again, these treatments would be very convenient for people with body acne. Finally, one of the most important ways to treat acne is to use patience. It may take months for some of these therapies to make a difference and if you have a bad case of body acne, it can be difficult to wait.

Cystic Acne - Understanding Its Causes and Treatments

You probably have suffered from acne but pray that you don't have to suffer cystic acne. Cystic acne is one of the many kinds of acne - the most dreaded type of acne. Usually, it's the dermatologist that gives a diagnosis of this type of acne. The dermatologist would take into consideration the patient's age and the kind of cystic acne lesions the patient has in order to give the proper diagnosis.

Before we define Cystic acne, let us know the common types of acne:

a. Newborn acne. This is the kind of acne that is often seen in newborn babies. You've probably seen a baby with tiny whiteheads dotting his or her face. That is newborn acne. This is fairly common among newborn.

b. Infantile acne. This is the kind of acne that is seen in older babies. This includes forms of whiteheads and blackheads.

c. Acne Vulgaris. This is the most common type of acne that is seen in many teenagers and young adults.

d. Acne fulminans. This is the acne that appears on a person's torso. This is the painful kind of acne because this is accompanied by pain and fevers.

e. Cystic acne or acne conglobata.

What is it?

A person suffering from cystic acne may experience agonizingly painful cysts forming on the skin's deep pores. This type of acne usually appears on the face, chest and back. They vary in size from the tiniest painful cyst-like formations to cysts that are a few inches big. The horrid thing about this type of acne is that once the formations break out, the bacteria will spread on other pores or skin areas and will infect these pores so that they too will start to form cysts or nodules.

This type of acne often plagues men more than women. Cystic acne takes longer than the common acne to heal. They also often leave ugly pockmarks and blemishes in their wake.

The Causes

Often, you need to identify the cause of the acne in order to pinpoint exactly the type of treatment that will work with the acne. Unfortunately, the cause of cystic acne is not exactly identified. Of course, experts have pinpointed contributing factors to developing cystic acne. Experts have found out that heredity plays a crucial factor in a person's chances of developing cystic acne later in life. Your genes are actually responsible for acne breakouts. Of course, there are other possible causes of this type of acne. This includes bacteria, excessive production of sebum and grime.

Treating Cystic Acne

If you have a stubborn case of acne and if you feel like your acne are far more painful and bigger than usual, you should definitely visit your dermatologist. Cystic acne is not easily cured by OTC drugs. Often, you'd need prescription acne medications for this type of acne.

Your dermatologist may prescribe oral medications like isotretinoin which helps in shrinking overactive oil glands. Their shrinkage then limits or minimizes the production of sebum. You may also be prescribed with tetracycline which is another form of antibiotic that is an effective treatment for acne.

Aside from oral medications, you can also consider alternative treatment for cystic acne. Actually, you need to consider other alternative acne treatment methods because oral antibiotics are not effective for long-term acne treatment. People who suffer from chronic cystic acne have discovered that oral medications will eventually stop working.

In this case, you can consider light therapy which kills acne causing bacteria upon exposure. This treatment also encourages skin regeneration so you will get clearer and smoother complexion. Of course, you need to have a good budget because light therapy treatment does not come cheap.

Blue Light Acne Therapy - Understanding the Basics

Blue Light Acne Therapy – Understanding the Basics

A BRIEF OVERVIEW

What are the Causes of Acne?

There are Four factors shown to cause acne including:
•    Hyperactive oil glands: Hyperactive oil glands occur in periods of stress and puberty due to hormonal changes causing the pores to be enlarged. Not only common for young people these days.  Adults can have acne at some points of their lives. This is mainly associated with stress.

•    Skin pore blockage: The pores are blocked resulting to trapping of the oils in the skin pores.

•    Normal flora of the skin activities: Oils are trapped under the skin and bacteria tends to grow there. As the bacteria releases chemicals, it alters the oil, which makes it even more irritating and results to inflammation of the skin.

•    Inflammation: Inflammation is produced when the body is trying to get rid of a foreign substance or is fighting off infection. In the case of acne, the body is trying to get rid of the irritating compounds that the normal bacteria are releasing.

Surgical Weight Loss – Understanding The Risks!

Surgical Weight Loss - Understanding The Risks!

We take a closer look at the reasons over-weight people and their families are considering surgery to combat the extra kilos and what are the necessary facts anyone opting for this method of weight loss needs to be aware of so as to be an informed and aware consumer of health care products and services, especially in the modern context.

For those who have watched what they are eating and also tried out various exercise options besides fad diets, pills and gadgets promising weight loss but still find body beautiful eludes them, weight loss surgery may well be the answer to all their woes. But, how far is it safe? Is it a long-term option for weight loss and weight management both? What are the possible side-effects of going under the knife? Who can benefit from it? Are there any restrictions on your lifestyle after you go in for weight loss surgery? How much does it cost? What kind of procedures are followed for weight loss surgery and how can one decide whether one is ready for it or not? Which doctor is best for performing weight loss surgery? Does medical insurance cover weight loss surgery? What is the after-care requirement of weight loss surgery?

All these questions need to be addressed first before one opts for weight loss surgery.

First and foremost, weight loss surgery is a major step to take and only recommended by doctors in a worse-case scenario i.e. when no other options for weight loss exist for the patient and if a patient is fit for surgery and can afford it. Overly fat or really obese people are usually recommended to go in for weight loss surgeries and those at health risks for life-threatening diseases may be given the option of going under the knife as well, to get rid of the excess baggage.

Cutting edge technology has empowered weight loss surgery to be considered a viable option for many overweight persons who have undergone a series of pre-surgery tests, including procedures using advanced medical devices such as roentgenograms, lab tests for chemical, bacteriologic and pathologic determination of imbalances in the human body system apart from using monitoring devices that update the doctor about a person's exact health condition, including any genetic disorders.

High clinical standards being strictly adhered for all these pre-surgical steps makes it possible for doctors and surgeons to make informed decisions and accurate diagnosis for a patient's weight problem and to educate them about the best surgical option available to them, within a specific budget and timeline.

Many people may be overly concerned about their appearance and thus aspire to improve on certain body parts but others with excess weigh issues to deal with may actually opt for total body sculpting and weight loss. Weight loss surgery is best considered for the latter case scenario rather than simply cosmetic reasons as it helps people lead longer, healthier more fulfilled ones instead of simply more body/beauty conscious ones.

Thus, people considering weight loss surgery would do well to analyze their true health situation, research the process recommended for them, consult an experienced and qualified bariatric surgeon after getting the nod from their family physician as to the pros and cons of weight loss surgery for themselves.

There are many services and products currently available in the market for problematic skin which include peels, lasers, acne light therapy and acne light products. However, it is important that you do your research before letting your skin undergo any treatment or before using any product. Some products and services done on your skin may end up doing more harm than good if they are not compatible with your skin type.

Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder (sad)

If the cool weather of this fall has made you to think of sunny beaches, palm trees and moving to the South, you are not the only one. Every woman experiences the fall effects in one way or the other. For some women, the change from summer's warmth to winter's cool and dark days brings a sort of depression, which is coined as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) by experts. Depending upon your location, SAD symptoms begin from late September and might last till April end.

Common telltale SAD symptoms in women include:

Trouble Maintaining Proper Sleep Cycle

Often, women might suffer with a persistent desire for sleep. They can even find it difficult to stay awake at all. Such desires to sleep can even leave them to suffer from extreme levels of fatigue. It is due to fact that they experience interrupted sleep, which has several moments of wakefulness. They find it difficult to maintain a proper sleep cycle. SAD symptom is often accompanied with waking very early.

Lethargy creeps in

Apart from fatigue, there are also cases where a woman might exhibit signs of finding it difficult to carry out her obligations. Her daily routine gets disrupted by lack of desires for doing anything. She might even feel guilty for her unproductive nature. However, it gets ignored, as a result of her illness. In extreme cases of SAD, women have lost their jobs and even found it to affect their family.

Depression

One of the most common SAD symptoms, in case of a woman, is experiencing depression. Guilty feelings, lowered self-image, misery and hopelessness may take a different road and numb her completely. Apathetic state in depression can even have destructive effects in their life.

Overeating

Another common SAD symptom is overeating. Some women experience cravings for foods, primarily reach in sugar or other carbohydrate forms. Overeating usually leads to a gain in weight and therefore perpetuates depression symptom.

Anxiety

Women often tend to avoid contacts with almost everyone in the society (Social anxiety). They can experience frustration and irritability with issues concerning society. Again, her inability of coping with the growing stress might even lead to a decrease in physical contact, even her significant other (General anxiety). On its flip side, women might even experience shorter periods of hypomania (staying over-active during spring & summer). However, it vanishes in spring along with other SAD symptoms.

Presence Of All The Symptoms Is Not Important

In case of sub-syndromal SAD, symptoms such as sleep, lethargic nature and eating problem stays. However, anxiety and depression are mild or absent. So, you should know that even if you are not having all the symptoms, you might still be affected with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

How Lights & Lamps Can Improve Your Situation?

The Winter Blues: Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder

© 2010 by Mr. Goodguy a consultant with a Chicago Lakeview Psychotherapy firm.

Faced with the reality of less sunlight, coupled with colder weather, many people here in the Midwest, such as a city like Chicago, experience an autumnal/winter phenomenon known as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).  SAD is more common that you might think. As many as half a million people in the United States may suffer from winter depression, with another 10% to 20% of the population experiencing mild traits of SAD. This condition appears to be more common in women than in men.

Let’s review some of the common symptoms of SAD according to the popular website familydoctor.org Remember that these symptoms generally begin to appear in the fall with the October time change and gradually get worse until spring, when in April the time change occurs again.

SYMPTOMS OF SAD

A change in appetite, especially a craving for sweet or starchy foods
Weight gain
A heavy feeling in the arms or legs
A drop in energy level
Fatigue
A tendency to oversleep
Difficulty concentrating
Irritability
Increased sensitivity to social rejection
Avoidance of social situations

If you have mentally checked off four or more of these symptoms, you may suffer from SAD. It is important to keep in mind that these symptoms often occur in tandem and therefore should viewed in their totality. With that stated, is equally important to speak to your physician to rule out other causes that may mimic SAD.  Let’s move on to exploring how to treat SAD.

TREATMENT FOR SAD

Much is still unknown about SAD, however some people have reported the following as being helpful in treating this seasonal disorder:

Talk therapy: working with a therapist in a way that lets you talk about your feelings of depression, anxiety and lack of energy can sometimes lessen the symptoms. Plus, a therapist trained in working with SAD may be able to offer useful coping tools.
Light therapy: using a specially made light box, you will sit in front of this device for a certain length of time each day. Generally, light therapy takes about 30 minutes each day throughout the fall and winter, when you're most likely to be depressed. These light boxes can be found online through various retailers, including e-bay. FYI: Tanning beds are not considered light therapy or an effective treatment for SAD.
Anti-depressants: There are a wide variety of anti-depressants available that are used to treat SAD. After speaking to your physician, he or she may prescribe something for you to help alleviate your symptoms.

SUMMARY

In Chicago, biting winds and cloudy skies can make even the hardiest person feel blue. But for some people, the reality of less sunlight coupled with the cold weather can cause real emotional problems. If you think you may have SAD, please talk to your physician or therapist. Effective treatments are now available, which can help you work through the emotional lows of wintertime. And cheer up – spring is just around the corner!
